The provision of clean, safe drinking water, and the disposal of waste water and sewage in an environmentally benign manner, comes top on the list of most governments’ responsibilities to their people. The systems of provision must vary enormously and be dictated by the specific needs, physical environment, financial circumstances and social structures of the communities they serve. Central government, community based organisations and the private sector all have roles to play in the provision of these services according to the local and national context. ULG draws on the operational experience of Northumbrian Water Limited, one of the UK’s most efficient private sector water companies, to advise governments, municipalities, communities and the private sector, on the operation and management of water supply and sanitation services. The expertise available to ULG covers the full range of engineering, technical, managerial and financial skills including appropriate approaches to asset management, leak detection, tariff setting and customer services. NWL’s operations in the north east and south east of England serve a mix of industrial, urban and rural customers, supplying water from boreholes, rivers and reservoirs, and operating water and waste water treatment plants from micro to macro scale. The Group’s commitment to the environment has resulted in the clean up of what had hitherto been two of the most polluted rivers inthe UK – the Tyne and the Tees. Through the close integration of thisexpertise with the long experience of ULG in working in the development process, we can offer a unique combination of the skills needed to tackle many of the problems currently faced by large industrial complexes in the Former Soviet Union and other countries undergoing the change from a centrally planned to a market economy. ULG’s overseas services have focussed on institutional support to a variety of entities in the water sector in towns and rural communities in South America, Africa, the Far East and the Former Soviet Union. We have worked in private sector initiatives, with rural communities and donor-funded projects for urban development. We have undertaken network analysis and established Geographical Information Systems for large conurbations, and advised on community built and operated water supply systems in remote rural areas. In addition to providing the services of our consultants overseas we are also able to offer study tours and attachments based in our UK operations. |
